Everyday self-care tips for when you’re too busy at home and work

If your typical week is booked up, it can seem like your health and self-care have to take a back seat. Some parents are so busy that proper nutrition and a balanced diet simply fall by the wayside. If that describes your situation, maybe it’s time to rethink your approach. Stop trying to force exercise and downtime into an already crowded schedule. Why not look for opportunities to weave healthy practices into the rhythm of your days? If you’re super busy raising children and providing for a family, your health and well-being should be a priority.

Work is stressful. Family life can be stressful. Driving to work is definitely stressful. If your body is responding to that pressure with headaches, anxiety, or nausea, you need to deal with the problem using all-natural supplements. Invest in some books on CD, line up some podcasts or download audiobooks. Focus on subjects that help you develop personal skills that can lead to self-fulfillment.

Check out self-help books on getting more organized at home and how to be a better parent. Once in a while, pop in an adventure story for some escapism and just relax a little. Or, try learning a few phrases each day in a foreign language. No matter how busy you are, avoid spending this time on the phone doing work (put it on “do-not-disturb” mode). Instead, treat your commute as “you” time — you’ve definitely earned it!

Find an Exercise Partner

One of the best ways to ensure you get some exercise is to find someone who’s in the same boat. Having an exercise partner you can walk with at lunchtime or in the morning before work. You’ll both reap the health benefits and can hold each other accountable for getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Plus, it’s more fun exercising with a friend. Better yet, after work, get the whole family together and find ways to get moving!

Impromptu Exercise

Instead of taking the elevator at work, take the stairs and exercise your heart, lungs, and leg muscles. It’s a good aerobic workout, and you can do it throughout your day. Take along a pair of sneakers and make it a little easier on your feet. If you ride the bus to work, get off a couple of stops early and walk the rest of the way. The next time you stop for groceries on the way home, park at the far end of the lot so you can squeeze in a brisk walk. You might be surprised to find out how many ways you can fit a few minutes of exercise into your daily routine.

Forget about entering exercise or downtime into your Daytimer or the digital schedule on your smartphone — it’s too easy to put it off when you see how much you’ve got lined up. Self-care should be as much a part of your regimen as showering and getting dressed. You need time for proper rest and exercise if you’re to keep things organized at home.
