Your ultimate 4th of July party playlist

I love a good playlist.

In honour of the 4th of July, I’ve searched high and low for the best, most patriotic songs that will rock your 4th of July barbecue.

Oh all right, I typed the following words into a search engine:

  • “USA”
  • “America”
  • “American”
  • Various US state names (sorry Delaware, the best I could come up with was Perry Como’s 1959 song where he warbles “What did Della wear, boy?”, then proceeds to answer himself “She wore a brand New Jersey” – hee hee).

Then I moved on to “drinking songs”

The following list reflects not only the fruits of my back-breaking labor, but also songs I genuinely like (or have discovered I like after a YouTube investigation).

THE ULTIMATE 4TH OF JULY PARTY PLAYLIST

  • Born in the USA – Bruce Springsteen
  • American Woman – Guess Who
  • American Pie – Don McLean
  • You Shook Me All Night Long – ACDC (well it does talk about American thighs!)
  • American Boy – Estelle, feat. Kanye West
  • This is America – Childish Gambino
  • Bored in the USA – Father John Misty (I’m kind of disappointed Weird Al didn’t nab this first).
  • FDT (F*** Donald Trump – YG & Nipsey Hussle
  • California Girls – Beach Boys/David Lee Roth
  • Young Americans – David Bowie
  • Party in the USA – Miley Cyrus
  • Kids in America – Kim Wilde (if you’re feeling a bit adventurous/drunk, check out One Direction’s version)
  • Firework – Katy Perry
  • Fourth of July – Mariah Carey
  • Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw? – Jimmy Buffett
  • Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Wide Open Spaces – Dixie Chicks
  • More Than a Feeling – Boston

Note: For most of these songs, it’s probably best not to listen to the lyrics in too much detail. Not if you want to maintain a happy vibe, anyway.

On the more heavy end of the scale, some songs are lampooning the American Dream, or protesting war and violence.

On the lighter side, other songs are extolling the lusty virtues of this great land’s inhabitants (“and the Northern girls, with the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night“).

Happy 4th of July!
